Andy Aspinall questions UFC’s safety rules after Tom Aspinall eye poke ends title fight

Andy Aspinall said eye pokes keep happening because the UFC does not make strict rules to stop them. He said fighters should be trained to keep fingers closed while defending. He complained that nothing has changed for years because people act only when profit is involved. In his words, “It will never change unless the UFC wants to change it. If they care about people, they will do it. But most people online, analysts, ex-fighters, YouTubers, they make money from videos, so they talk for money. It’s about money.”

He said he is not speaking for views or sponsors. He said he speaks only for the safety of the sport, not for business. He made it clear that eye pokes are a real danger and that fighters’ health should matter more than views or pay-per-view sales.

Tom Aspinall was defending his undisputed UFC heavyweight title for the first time. The fight was one of the biggest card highlights of UFC 321. But after the eye poke from Ciryl Gane, Tom signalled that he could not see clearly. The referee stopped the fight, and doctors checked him before calling it a no-contest.
