In a dramatic turn of events, former Thane MP Rajan Vichare stepped in to resolve a dispute between a local shopkeeper and a Marathi youth who was allegedly beaten up by the shopkeeper at Thane railway station.
The former MP summoned the shopkeeper to his office, asking him to apologise to the youth by touching his feet.
This comes after a man was allegedly beaten up after a dispute over mobile recharge led to a quarrel outside the Thane railway station, police said on Wednesday.
A video of the incident, which took place on Tuesday night, went viral.
According to an official of Naupada police station, the complainant, a 45-year-old man, was drunk when he visited the mobile recharge shop.
After an altercation, the shopkeeper and his friends allegedly beat up the man. The shopkeeper quickly rolled down the shutters as a crowd began to gather and tensions escalated, threatening to escalate into further conflict.
Traffic police personnel on duty near the station rushed to the spot and prevented the situation from deteriorating further.
A case was registered against Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections relating to causing hurt. Police detained four of the accused and released them after giving notice.
This incident comes at a time when the language row in Maharashtra is intensifying after some supporters of the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena assaulted a shopkeeper for refusing to speak Marathi.
