Dhanbad: Two persons died and one was injured while mining coal illegally at Chapapur OCP in Nirsa police station area of Dhanbad on Wednesday. The injured was immediately rushed by family members to Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College and Hospital (SNMMCH), Dhanbad.
Doctors said his condition is critical.According to local sources, the mishap took place in the morning when several people had entered an abandoned site to extract coal illegally. Suddenly, a portion of the mine collapsed, trapping many inside. Panic spread at the site as people ran for safety. Witnesses claimed that at least five more persons may still be buried under the debris.Soon after the incident, agitated villagers and relatives of the victims gathered at the spot.
Without waiting for official help, they started rescue operations on their own. Tension gripped the area as locals expressed anger over the recurring incidents of illegal mining and the lack of preventive measures.At SNMMCH, the arrival of the injured miner led to chaos, as a large crowd of villagers and relatives assembled at the hospital. Police had to intervene to manage the situation and ensure medical assistance.
Nirsa police officials confirmed that a rescue operation has been launched and efforts are being made to ascertain the exact number of people trapped. “As soon as we received the information, our team reached the spot. Search operations are underway. The matter will be thoroughly investigated, and those responsible will face strict action,” a police officer said.
