Six people, including three family members, arrested in connection with the murder of a 24-year-old Tripura youth, whose body was found stuffed in a trolley bag, were remanded in police custody by the West Tripura District civic judge in Agartala on Thursday.

Many people had gathered on the court premises seeking stringent punishment for the accused — Dr Dibakar Saha, 28, his father Dipak Saha, 52, mother Debika Saha, 40, Nabanita Das, 25, Joydeep Das, 20 and Animesh Yadav, 21 – who were arrested on Wednesday.

The suitcase that contained the body parts of Shariful Islam was stored inside an ice-cream freezer at Gandacherra of Tripura’s Dhalai district, nearly three days after he went missing from Agartala.

The police maintained strict vigil during the court proceedings to prevent any untoward incident as people raised slogans against the accused.

West Tripura District Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar told indianexpress.com that all six persons are undergoing questioning in a secure location of the police authorities.

“The case has almost been cracked. We have learnt a lot of details. We have got a lot of digital evidence, including text messages on mobile phones that prove the involvement of all of the accused persons. Some more details might come up in questioning. All findings will be produced in the court,” said Kiran Kumar.

As per preliminary investigation, the motive of the murder was a fallout of a triangular love affair involving Islam, Dr Dibakar, and Dr Dibakar’s cousin.

According to Kiran Kumar, Islam had gone to meet Dr Dibakar Saha as per his invitation at a place of his friend, Joydeep Das, at South Indranagar with some gifts. It is learnt that the doctor allegedly strangulated the man at the house in the presence of Joydeep, Animesh, and Nabamita, who are Dr Dibakar’s friends.

A missing complaint was lodged at the New Capital Complex police station on June 9 by Shariful’s family.

According to the police, Dr. Dibakar’s mother was involved in transporting the body to Gandacherra as well.
