Tipra Motha founder and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma said that the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Tripura’s capital, Agartala, would not be allowed to reopen unless attacks on Hindus and other minorities, and anti-India statements in the neighbouring country stopped.

Reacting to the suspension of all visa and consular services by the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission, he said on Tuesday (December 23, 2025) that India was capable of responding firmly to threats issued to Indian diplomatic missions in Bangladesh.

Addressing the people of Tripura and members of his party’s youth wing, Mr. Debbarma said that national interest must take precedence over party politics, and called for unity in the face of external challenges.

The Tipra Motha is a minor ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tripura.

“The Bangladesh mission in Agartala will not be allowed to resume operations unless the attacks on minorities in Bangladesh, especially the Hindus, end and also hostile statements against India. They are also threatening to occupy the northeast,” Mr. Debbarma said.

Earlier, he said he was “astonished by a few Indian intellectuals” suggesting that former Bangladesh Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, be handed over to Dhaka. “Would they suggest handing over the Dalai Lama to China? As Indians, our policy is and should be that we stand by friends unwaveringly,” Mr. Debbarma said.

Assam man arrested

Various organisations continued to protest the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, a garment factory worker, by a Muslim mob in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh. These organisations include the All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) and the All Assam Bengali Parishad.

India should pursue firm diplomatic measures against the Bangladesh government and, if required, consider stronger steps, AAMSU president Rezaul Karim Sarkar said.

Meanwhile, the police in central Assam’s Rangiya detained a man for posting a video on social media supporting the lynching of Das in Bangladesh. The man was identified as Mohammed Saif Akhtar Ali, who, the police said, operates Facebook and Instagram accounts under the name “Bollo Chaiwala”.

“We are examining the content of the video and the associated social media accounts. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation,” a police officer said.
