A video showing US President Donald Trump briefly grabbing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s wrist while stepping up a small stair at the G7 Summit has gone viral on social media. The footage, filmed as the two leaders walked together at the summit venue in the French spa town of Evian-les-Bains, shows Trump reaching for PM Modi’s wrist as they approach a short set of steps.

The wrist-grab video emerged shortly after another moment involving the two leaders attracted attention online. Earlier in the day, videos and photographs of PM Modi and Trump greeting each other with a warm handshake circulated widely, marking their first face-to-face meeting in 16 months.

Prior to this interaction, the last in-person meeting between the two leaders took place in February 2025 at the White House, shortly after Trump’s second inauguration. Following their latest greeting at the G7 Summit, PM Modi and Trump were seen engaged in a brief conversation ahead of a scheduled bilateral meeting on Wednesday which comes at an important juncture in India-US relations.

Bilateral ties have faced several challenges in recent months, including the Trump administration’s decision to impose punitive tariffs on Indian imports. Relations also came under strain last week after three Indian sailors were killed in US attacks on a merchant vessel off the coast of Oman.

Both countries have sought to strengthen engagement as during a visit to India last month, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio extended an invitation from Trump for PM Modi to visit the White House in the near future and described India as the “cornerstone" of Washington’s Indo-Pacific strategy.
