US President Donald Trump expressed his belief on Friday that Democrat nominee Zohran Mamdani is likely to win the race for New York City mayor, even as he mocked several candidates and hinted at political manoeuvring behind the scenes.

In an appearance on Fox and Friends in New York, Trump said he’s not closely monitoring polling data, but believes the progressive 33-year-old candidate has a strong chance of victory. “I’m not looking at the polls too carefully, but it would look like he’s going to win," the President remarked.

Trump referred to Mamdani, a democratic socialist, as “my little communist," while hinting at the influence he might hold over a Mamdani administration. “He has to come to Washington for money," Trump said, suggesting potential leverage should Mamdani take office.

The President also commented on former Governor Andrew M Cuomo’s prospects in the race, noting that Cuomo might still have a path to victory if two other candidates were to exit the contest. He reiterated his preference for a more streamlined race. “I would like to see a one-on-one race between Mamdani and Cuomo," Trump said, describing Cuomo as a “more moderate Democrat" and someone he has known for years.

Trump didn’t spare the Republican nominee, Curtis Sliwa, from criticism. He dismissed the Guardian Angels founder and cat advocate as “not exactly prime time," adding that Sliwa would likely try to fill Gracie Mansion with “thousands of cats."

He also took aim at Cuomo’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly the crisis in state-run nursing homes. Trump accused the former governor of mishandling the response, echoing criticism from others who argue that Cuomo’s policies cost lives.

Meanwhile, discussions within Trump’s inner circle reportedly include plans to incentivise at least one candidate, current Mayor Eric Adams, to exit the race. According to The New York Times, a potential offer of an ambassadorship to Saudi Arabia has been floated as a way to clear the field.

Mamdani, for his part, has made it clear that he intends to use the mayor’s office as a platform for progressive politics. If elected, he has vowed “to reject Donald Trump’s fascism, to stop ICE agents from deporting our neighbours, and to govern our city as a model for the Democratic Party."

Reacting to the potential of Mamdani’s victory, Trump seemed astonished. “It’s amazing," he said, “that a socialist like Mamdani looks likely to become mayor of my home city."
