US President Donald Trump startled and amused his supporters at a rally in North Carolina on Friday when he unexpectedly spoke about his wife, Melania Trump, while recalling a past FBI raid on his Florida home.

The rally, which was supposed to focus on economic concerns such as inflation and high medicine prices, shifted to the 2022 search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, with the US President sharing a personal detail that drew laughter from the crowd.

Describing the search, Trump said, “They went into my wife’s closet … they looked at her drawers," referring to how federal agents searched the residence.

He then spoke about Melania’s belongings, saying, “Her undergarments, sometimes referred to as panties, are folded perfectly, wrapped. They’re, like, so perfect." Trump added humorously, “I think that she steams them."

Trump’s remarks were made while criticising the FBI raid, which took place after the National Archives and Records Administration flagged concerns over missing presidential records. The agency reported that boxes of documents had been taken to Mar-a-Lago after Trump left office at the end of his first term.

The FBI later searched as part of an investigation into whether classified materials had been improperly stored or withheld. Officials were examining possible obstruction of justice and violations related to the handling of sensitive records under the Espionage Act. During the operation, agents recovered 11 sets of classified documents, some labelled “top secret", which are meant to be kept only in secure government facilities.

Trump has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing in the case. In June 2023, he was charged by a federal grand jury over the alleged mishandling of classified documents and pleaded not guilty. Although further charges were added later, the case was dropped in July 2024.
