Twisha Sharma Death Case: The Supreme Court on Monday took suo motu cognisance of the death case of 33-year-old Twisha Sharma, who died at her matrimonial home in Bhopal on May 12, and underscored the need for a “fair, independent and impartial" probe.

It also noted that the CBI would immediately take over the investigation following the Madhya Pradesh government’s recommendation.

The top court stepped in after Twisha Sharma’s family pointed to multiple discrepancies in the investigation, post-mortem findings and official records. Even as the Madhya Pradesh government has sought a CBI probe and a second post-mortem has been done, several key questions remain unanswered.

Here are the 7 unanswered questions in the case:

Why was the belt not sent during the initial post-mortem?

One of the biggest controversies in the case centres around the alleged ligature material – a belt said to have been used in the hanging.

Twisha Sharma’s family questioned why the belt was not made available to doctors during the initial post-mortem, arguing that doctors could not properly match the ligature marks on her neck without examining the alleged hanging material.

The Bhopal Police Commissioner admitted the belt had been seized by the Forensic Science Laboratory team but was not sent to the hospital in time, calling it a possible case of negligence. Police, however, maintain that the belt was later sent and that the delay did not affect the investigation.

“Regarding the matter of the noose used for the hanging, it was indeed seized from the crime scene on the very day of the incident. However, the police personnel, the investigating officer, who visited the scene to conduct the inquiry, failed to submit it during the post-mortem examination," Police Commissioner Rajneesh Kashyap said.

Why are there alleged gaps in injury documentation?

The family has also raised concerns over the post-mortem report, claiming that several injuries found on Twisha Sharma’s body were either inadequately documented or omitted.

The issue was highlighted in Bhopal court, where the family sought preservation of the body and demanded further forensic scrutiny. Police later submitted in writing that they had no objection to a second post-mortem examination.

Why do CCTV timings and the FIR not match?

Another major question surrounds the timeline of events on the night of May 12.

According to CCTV footage cited in court, Twisha Sharma was seen going upstairs toward the terrace around 7:20 pm. Around 8:20 pm, three individuals were allegedly seen bringing her body downstairs.

However, the FIR reportedly records the time of death as 10:50 pm.

The nearly three-hour gap has become central to the case, raising questions over whether the CCTV timestamp was incorrect, the FIR timing was wrongly recorded, or whether crucial events remain unaccounted for.

Why are there contradictions in the FIR?

The FIR itself has come under scrutiny over multiple inconsistencies.

Twisha Sharma’s age reportedly appears differently in various sections of the document. In one part, her date of birth is mentioned as April 16, 1987, while elsewhere her age is stated as 33 and 31.

Another contradiction concerns the handling of the body. While the FIR reportedly says the body was handed over to the family, relatives claim they never accepted it and that it remained in the mortuary for days.

What role did WhatsApp chats and audio clips play?

WhatsApp chats, leaked audio clips and call detail records have also become central to the investigation.

Twisha Sharma’s family claims that chats recovered from her phone indicated distress over her marital life. An audio recording allegedly featuring Giribala Singh questioning Twisha’s character also triggered outrage online.

Meanwhile, her husband Samarth Singh has claimed in court that the chats circulating online are “edited and incomplete".

The family has also demanded preservation of call records, alleging that calls were made to influential persons after Twisha’s death which may have impacted the investigation.

Did influence affect the probe?

Perhaps the biggest question surrounding the case is whether the probe was influenced due to Giribala Singh’s background as a retired district judge and current consumer commission chairperson.

The Supreme Court’s decision to take suo motu cognisance, references to possible “institutional bias", allegations regarding calls to influential individuals and the state government’s push for a CBI probe have all amplified concerns over whether the original investigation was compromised.

Why was the body moved before police arrived?

Investigators are also probing why Twisha Sharma’s body was allegedly taken down and transported to hospital before police reached the scene.

Calling it a “key point" in the investigation, Kashyap said police are examining CCTV footage from the residence and reconstructing the sequence of events.

“This constitutes a key point in our ongoing investigation, and we are actively looking into it," Kashyap said, adding that every aspect of the case would be thoroughly investigated.
