Two govt school students held for assaulting teacher with liquor bottles near Sivakasi

VIRUDHUNAGAR: Two Class XII students were on Wednesday arrested for assaulting a teacher with liquor bottles at a govt school near Sivakasi. Police said Shanmugasundaram, 47, of Thiruthangal, who teaches at the govt higher secondary school there, has been admitted to hospital and is stable.In the afternoon, he was handling classes when four Class XII students turned up late. Upon questioning them, he found that they had consumed liquor, police said. Shanmugasundaram asked them to accompany him to the headmaster’s room. As he was walking towards the room, two students attacked him with liquor bottles they had kept in their pockets.Shanmugasundaram suffered injuries on the head. Other teachers and students rushed him to the Thiruthangal Government Hospital where he received more than 10 stitches.

He has been admitted in the hospital for treatment. Following the incident, police and school education department officials visited the school and conducted an inquiry. The Thiruthangal police registered a case, arrested two 17-year-old Class XII students and sent them to an observation home in Madurai district.In Dec 2023, two Class XI students were arrested for assaulting a teacher with machetes at the same school in Thiruthangal.
