At least two women Naxalites were killed in an encounter with security forces in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district on Wednesday, officials said.

The encounter broke out after an input of a few members of Gatta LOS (local organisation squad) of Maoists camping in a forest adjoining Modaske village in Etapalli taluka was received by the police this morning, news agency PTI reported, quoting a police official.

As soon as they received the information, an operation was launched from Aheri by the police, along with five units of C-60, a specialised anti-Naxal commando squad of the Gadchiroli police.

The CRPF assisted the operations team in laying the outer cordon.

When the contingent was searching the forest area, the Naxalites fired indiscriminately at the police, to which the security forces retaliated.

The police recovered two bodies of Naxal women after the gunfire stopped.

An automatic AK-47 rifle, a sophisticated pistol, live ammunition, a large amount of Naxal literature, and their belongings were also seized.

Last week on Friday, two Naxals were killed in an encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur. The incident took place when the security officials were out on an anti-Naxal operation following a gunfight in the forest area bordering Telangana.

A day earlier, ten Naxalites, including Central Committee Member of the outlawed CPI (Maoist) Modem Balakrishna, were killed in an encounter in the state’s Gariaband district. Balakrishna carried a reward of Rs 1 crore on his head.

Meanwhile, the Narendra Modi-led central government has set a deadline to wipe off Naxalism from every nook and corner of its land. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has asserted that India is on the path to being “Naxal-free", combining forceful security measures with deep developmental interventions.
