Udayagiri, considered the most backward and far-flung Assembly segment under the Nellore Lok Sabha constituency, is all set for the launch of ‘VPR Netra’, a flagship programme of VPR Foundation run by Member of Parliament Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy. It is meant to screen, diagnose and treat eye disorders among the poor and provide them with spectacles for free on the spot.
Mr. Prabhakar Reddy, along with his spouse Vemireddy Prasanthi Reddy (Kovur MLA) and Udayagiri MLA Kakarla Suresh, will formally declare open the project in Varikuntapadu mandal on Monday.
The foundation had chosen Udayagiri for the launch of its previous scheme ‘VPR Amruthadhara’, meant to establish 170 drinking water plants in the hinterland in the district and also the project to distribute 950 electric tricycles to the disabled.
VPR Netra
Under the VPR Netra programme, a bus worth ₹3 crore has been converted into a state-of-the-art mobile clinic, with lensometer, vision LED chart, AR Machine, lens cutting and grinding machines and spectacles of fifteen brands.
“All the tests are free, and the spectacles will be handed over to the patients within minutes,“ Mr. Prabhakar Reddy told the media. Mr. Suresh thanked the MP for choosing his constituency for the prestigious launch. The scheme will be expanded to other constituencies in phases.
