Atletico Madrid booked their place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the first time in nine years, edging past Barcelona 3-2 on aggregate despite a tense 2-1 defeat in the second leg at the Metropolitano Stadium.

Diego Simeone’s side came into the match with a 2-0 advantage from the first leg, but Barcelona quickly wiped out that lead with a blistering start.

Lamine Yamal capitalised on a defensive error from Clement Lenglet to score in the fourth minute, before Ferran Torres doubled the lead in the 24th minute with a fine finish, levelling the tie on aggregate. Atletico Madrid, however, responded strongly as Marcos Llorente set up Ademola Lookman, who scored in the 31st minute to restore their overall advantage.

Barcelona continued to dominate possession in the second half, with Pedri, Gavi and Dani Olmo controlling the midfield. They even thought they had taken the lead when Torres scored again, but the goal was ruled out for offside. The game then turned in Atletico’s favour when Barcelona were reduced to 10 men after Eric Garcia was sent off for a last-man challenge on Alexander Sorloth.

Despite late pressure, Atletico held firm to seal qualification.

Atleti Joy And Barca Despair

“We’ve been dreaming big for a long time," goalkeeper Juan Musso said. “We wanted to get through this stage and we knew we could do it. We remain true to our dreams. It’s a close-knit and lovely group. We deserve great things. The team will give it their all."

“(We’re) very happy, knocking out a great Barca side. We had a great game away… it was really hard for us at the start (of this one), but the team knew how to get back on its feet," Atletico midfielder Koke told Movistar.

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick reflected on the narrow defeat, saying, “That’s football for you – it all comes down to the little details. We need to improve in certain areas, but in terms of mentality and attitude… the team gave it their all. That’s exactly what we want to see. They did a fantastic job, but we didn’t quite make it."

“I think we had a very good game, we gave our lives out there, we tried everything," said Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

“I feel like luck was not on our side. We have to continue — we’re on a good path, we’re growing every year," added the Dutchman.

Atletico will now face either Arsenal or Sporting in the semi-finals, keeping alive their dream of a first-ever Champions League title.
