A driver who injured nearly 80 people when his car rammed into a crowd of Liverpool fans celebrating their team’s Premier League championship was charged on Thursday with intentionally causing grievous bodily harm and six other serious offenses, according to a prosecutor.

Paul Doyle, 53, faced charges of dangerous driving and five additional counts related to causing grievous bodily harm, Prosecutor Sarah Hammond stated.

Police reported that 79 individuals were injured in the incident, with at least 50 receiving treatment at hospitals. The ages of the injured ranged from 9 to 78, and seven people remained hospitalized in stable condition.

The charges did not specify the number of victims associated with each count, and neither Hammond nor Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims of Merseyside Police took questions during a brief news conference in Liverpool.

“I fully understand how this incident has left us all shocked and saddened, and I know many will continue to have concerns and questions," Sims said.

“Our detectives are working tirelessly, with diligence and professionalism, to seek the answer to all of those questions."

The city had been celebrating Liverpool’s record-tying 20th title when Doyle drove down a street filled with fans, turning joy into tragedy.

Police suggested that Doyle bypassed a roadblock by following an ambulance responding to a cardiac arrest report.

Eyewitness video captured scenes of horror as the car hit and tossed a person draped in a Liverpool flag into the air, then swerved into a mass of people on the side of the road.

Merseyside Police believe the driver acted alone and do not suspect terrorism.
