West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been “kept under surveillance" to ensure that there are no irregularities ahead of the West Bengal election results, said BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Friday.

His remarks came a day after Trinamool Congress (TMC) Chief spent nearly four hours at an EVM strongroom in Bhabanipur and left at 12:07 am.

Adhikari, who is fighting against Banerjee in Bhabanipur, said that they are strictly monitoring electronic voting machines (EVMs) and strongrooms amid allegations of ballot tampering.

Sharing an image of Banerjee inside the strongroom, Adhikari wrote, “I wish to assure the esteemed community of voters from the entire state of West Bengal, including the Bhabanipur constituency, that the Trinamool candidate from this centre, namely the outgoing chief minister…has been strictly instructed to refrain from availing any undue advantages."

Adhikari, who is an ex-aide of Mamata, is now fighting elections against her from the BJP party in the Bhabanipur seat.

“No matter how much effort she makes, she has been unable to engage in any activities outside the rules," Adhikari stated.

The BJP leader made the remarks a day after Banerjee stormed inside Bhabanipur’s strongroom in Kolkata and alleged that the BJP and the Election Commission had tampered with EVMs together. She further warned that any kind of EVM irregularities, like tampering with voting machines or the counting process, would be met with a “life-and-death" fight.

Mamata Banerjee Visits Bhabanipur’s Strongroom

The chief minister visited the strongroom after a viral video showed suspicious movement inside Khudiram Anushilan Kendra in central Kolkata, where EVMs from all seven North Kolkata Assembly seats are kept.

Stating that her party has received reports of EVM tampering in various parts of the state,  Banerjee said, “There is a strong room here for EVMs. We found that in many places, manipulation is taking place. When I saw the CCTV on TV, I thought I should also go and see it. Initially, the Central Forces wouldn’t let me enter. But according to our election rules, the candidate and election agent of any party are allowed up to the sealed room."

“Even after that, if someone tries to steal the EVM machine, if someone tries to steal the counting, then we will fight life and death together," she added.

Meanwhile, TMC, in a sharply worded post, said that the footage showed ballot boxes being opened by people without the presence of authorised representatives and stated that this is a serious breach. They alleged that the BJP and the Election Commission are both involved in electoral malpractice.

EC Refutes TMC’s Allegations

The Election Commission of India has rejected the allegations, maintaining that all procedures were followed and strongrooms remain secure.

It said all seven strongrooms at Khudiram Anushilan Kendra were sealed after polling in the presence of candidates, their agents, and the General Observer, with the final room secured around 5:15 am.

Strict Security Arrangements Near EVM Strongrooms: BJP

BJP leader Tapas Roy said that they have made strict security arrangements near all EVM strongrooms and accused the TMC of spreading rumours.

“We will deploy two persons to look after the strong room…They (TMC) are just spreading rumours as they are preparing ground for their defeat…Three-layer security arrangements are here," he said, while speaking to ANI.
