Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar on Saturday inaugurated a Gen Z Post Office at VIT University in Amaravati, marking a step towards modernising India’s postal network.

Addressing a gathering, Mr. Chandra Sekhar said that after the Railways, the Postal Department was the country’s largest employer, with around 4.50 lakh staff.

If this vast human resource is utilised effectively, the department can emerge as one of the strongest public institutions. With the advent of technologies, tracking of operations has become easier, enabling effective service delivery, he said.

He said that the Postal Department was no longer confined to the delivery of letters, having transformed into an e-commerce platform. Technology was being leveraged to make post offices competitive with private courier services. “At the Gen Z Post Office, a marketing professional has been appointed. The focus is on the efficient use of human resources,” said the Union Minister.

He said Gen Z Post Offices aim to make the youth stakeholders in the government system. Three such offices have been set up in the State and nearly 50 across the country, he said, adding that 89% of expenditure went towards salaries, while social responsibility commitments limited the service charges.
