The United Naga Council (UNC), apex group of the Nagas of Manipur, Wednesday announced a “trade embargo” across all Naga areas starting September 8 midnight, protesting against the Centre’s “unilateral” decision to scrap the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and impose border fencing within the Naga homeland.
In a statement, the UNC said that despite repeated democratic efforts through memoranda, rallies, agitations, and press statements since January 19 last year, the government has continued to adopt an “indifferent attitude” toward the sentiments and concerns of the Naga people.
“The council emphasised that the FMR is not merely a policy but a recognition of the historical, cultural, and traditional ties shared by Nagas across artificial borders. And, that fencing off ancestral lands will directly undermine the Naga people’s identity, heritage, and inherent rights over their land,” the statement said.
