The University of Hyderabad slipped from its 2025 ranking of 239 to 246, while the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad improved its rank from 320 to 270 in the latest ranking in the QS University Rankings for Asia. The rankings are compiled by Quacquarelli Symonds, which is a global higher education services and analytics company.
Reacting to the news, the UoH issued a statement. “We are thrilled to see UoH’s hard work and dedication being recognised on the global stage,” said B.J. Rao, Vice-Chancellor, University of Hyderabad. “This achievement is a testament to the university’s commitment to excellence and its focus on creating a diverse and inclusive academic community. We will continue to strive for excellence and make a positive impact on the world,” he said.
The UoH had an overall score of 45 while the IITH had 43.1. The best university with 100 points was the University of Hong Kong. The UoH has better citations per paper at 29.8 while the IITH has 27.2, but the IITH has 98.6 papers per faculty as against 83.1 of UoH.
The QS ranking data shows that IIT-H performs well in areas of employer reputation and graduate outcomes, indicators that are part of the strength of publicly funded institutions. But the institute’s overall ranking is weighed down by low scores in international faculty ratios, international student presence and research network. These are the areas where top global universities, as well as emerging Asian institutions outperform Indian ones.

Remarkably, the UoH has scored high at 98.1 in staff having PhDs while the IITH had 97.1 in the same measure. The UoH had an academic reputation score of 55.7 while the IITH had 39.3.
Both UoH and IIT ranked lower due to poor faculty–student ratios , low sustainability scores and limited international collaboration, all key components of the QS methodology. The IIT-H had a faculty student ratio of 34.1, UoH at 38.9, and the OU at 10.1.
Despite Hyderabad’s rise as a technology and innovation hub, its universities are yet to translate that advantage into global academic competitiveness. This at a time when the universities across the world are pouring more money into research.
In the earlier QS World University Rankings 2026, the top performer was IIT Hyderabad (IITH) at Rank 666 which is two ranks below the 2025 ranking of 664. The 17-year-old institution had the best performance from Telangana. It had trailed the older ones by a wide margin like the IIT Delhi (124), IIT Bombay (129) and IIT Madras (180).
The Osmania University was ranked at 470, MANUU at 578, National Institute of Technology Warangal was ranked at 779, Kakatiya University at 1,248 and EFLU at 1,423 out of 1,530 institutions of higher learning in Asia.
