Police in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district have registered a case against five members of a woman’s in-laws’ family after she accused her father-in-law of repeatedly raping her at gunpoint and alleged that her husband divorced her by pronouncing triple talaq over the phone.
According to police, the complainant, a resident of Lucknow, married a man from the Muslim Bagh area of Rupaideha town in 2023 as per Muslim customs.
In her complaint, the woman alleged that the first two years of her marriage passed without any major issues. However, she claimed that her father-in-law later began making inappropriate advances towards her.
Taking advantage of her husband’s absence due to work, the accused allegedly threatened her with a country-made pistol and raped her on multiple occasions, according to the FIR.
The woman further alleged that when she informed her husband about the incidents, he threatened her and warned her against disclosing the matter to anyone.
She claimed that the latest incident took place on January 24, 2026, when her father-in-law allegedly raped her again.
In-Laws Accused of Assault
According to the complaint, when she raised an alarm following the alleged assault, her mother-in-law, sister-in-law and brother-in-law reached the spot but instead of helping her, allegedly assaulted her.
The woman later returned to her parental home in Lucknow.
She further alleged that after she left, her husband pronounced “talaq" three times over the phone and ended the marriage.
Case Registered Against Five Family Members
Based on the complaint, police have registered a case against the husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother-in-law and sister-in-law under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act.
Rupaideha Station House Officer Ramesh Kumar Rawat said the allegations are being investigated.
Husband Denies Allegations
During questioning, the husband alleged that his wife was involved in a relationship with another person and claimed that marital disputes had arisen because of the issue.
Police said all claims made by both sides are being verified as part of the investigation.
“The matter is under investigation. Further action will be taken based on the facts that emerge during the probe," Rawat said.
No arrests have been made in the case so far.
