Upa Lokayukta K. N. Phaneendra visited K. R. Hospital in Mysuru on August 2 and listened to grievances of patients and their attenders.

After visiting various wards of the hospital, the Upa Lokayukta gathered information from patients about medical treatment and other facilities, including food, water, toilets and cleanliness.

Mr. Phaneendra inquired about the laboratory facilities, including X-ray machines and blood tests, besides availability of doctors.

During his interaction with patients and their attenders, he came across complaints of demand for money, lack of cleanliness, and abusive behaviour by a section of the employees.

After hearing the complaints, the Upa Lokayukta told the authorities concerned to take action any employee who is found to be demanding or accepting money from patients.

With regard to shortage of employees, Mr. Phaneendra said he would take up the matter with the authorities concerned.

He informed the Resident Medical Officer Nayaz Pasha about the complaints and directed him to crack down upon employees found demanding bribes from patients. Though no complaint was heard about demand for money by doctors or nurses, the hospital management should crack down on the other employees, including those from D Group or security personnel, who were demanding bribes or ill-treating patients. He said patients not only deserve proper medical attention and treatment, but also to be treated with courtesy.

He emphasized that the hospital must maintain cleanliness and the staff should interact politely with patients. The presence of a dog inside the hospital premises drew the attention of the Upa Lokayukta, who questioned the authorities about the same. He warned that necessary action will be taken if such incidents are repeated.

Dean and Director of Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MMC&RI) Dr. Dakshayini, Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikant Reddy, and Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer (CEO) S. Yukesh Kumar were present during the inspection by the Upa Lokayukta.
