An “illegal" old-age home was busted in Uttar Pradesh’s Noida, where 42 elderly people living in pitiable condition in this stage of their lives were rescued on Thursday, officials said.
In a raid in Anand Niketan Vridha Seva Ashram at C-5, Sector 55 yesterday, the police found some women tied up, some people wearing urine and faeces-stained clothes, while many residents did not have any clothes at all. Some others were also forced to live in “basement-like" rooms, the officials said.
A video showing the poor condition of an old-age home recently went viral and was sent to the Social Welfare Department in Lucknow. The video showed an elderly woman kept in a room with her hands tied. After this, the State Women’s Commission and Noida police raided the home on Thursday and rescued the senior citizens.

Meenakshi Bharala, a women’s commission member, said that the old-age home was illegal and was found in a deplorable condition.
“During the raid, an elderly woman was found tied up while other elderly people were locked in basement-like rooms. Some men did not even have clothes, while many elderly women were found in half-clad condition," news agency PTI quoted her as saying.
She said that there were 42 senior citizens living in the ashram, out of which three elderly people will be shifted to an old-age home run by the social welfare department on Friday, and the rest will be shifted to other government-approved old-age homes in the next five days.
The official said that the old-age home will be sealed.
