The United States military said its forces intercepted multiple Iranian missiles and drones launched toward Gulf countries and key maritime routes, marking a fresh escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran despite ongoing efforts to maintain a fragile ceasefire.
According to a statement issued by US Central Command (CENTCOM) on Friday, American forces first shot down four Iranian one-way attack drones that were heading toward the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important shipping corridors.
CENTCOM said the drones posed an immediate threat to regional maritime traffic. In response, US forces carried out strikes on Iranian coastal surveillance radar installations in Goruk and on Qeshm Island, saying the operation was intended to prevent further attacks against shipping and regional targets.
Hours later, Iran launched seven ballistic missiles toward Kuwait and Bahrain, CENTCOM said. Initial assessments indicated that six of the missiles were intercepted, while a seventh failed to reach its intended target.
The US military said there were no reports of injuries to American personnel as a result of the attacks.
CENTCOM also rejected Iranian claims that its strikes had damaged the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, describing the allegations as false.
Bahrain Denounces Iran’s ‘Blatant Aggression’
Bahrain on Saturday strongly condemned what it described as renewed Iranian attacks targeting its territory and neighbouring Kuwait, saying the two Gulf states had intercepted seven missiles launched by Tehran.
In a statement, Bahrain’s foreign ministry accused Iran of violating the sovereignty of both countries and denounced the missile launches as an act of aggression.
“The ministry of foreign affairs strongly condemns the renewed attacks by the Islamic Republic of Iran against the Kingdom of Bahrain and the sisterly State of Kuwait," the statement said.
Calling the incident a “blatant aggression," the ministry said the attacks represented a serious breach of international norms and the territorial integrity of the two Gulf nations.
The statement came after regional tensions escalated following reports of missile interceptions over Bahrain and Kuwait. Bahrain, which hosts the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet, has been on heightened alert amid the latest exchange of attacks involving Iran and the United States.
