US Vice President JD Vance has said Washington expects the Strait of Hormuz to reopen to international shipping without any tolls or additional charges, signalling a key American demand as negotiations with Iran move closer to a potential agreement.
Speaking amid growing optimism over a possible US-Iran deal, Vance said freedom of navigation through the strategic waterway remains a priority for the United States and its allies.
“The expectation is that the Strait of Hormuz will reopen toll-free," Vance said, underscoring Washington’s position that commercial vessels should be able to transit the route without new restrictions or fees.
Why Hormuz Matters
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, connecting the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea. Roughly one-fifth of global oil consumption passes through the narrow waterway, making it vital for international energy markets.
Shipping through the strait has been severely disrupted since the outbreak of conflict between the United States, Iran and Israel earlier this year. Iran imposed restrictions on maritime traffic and required vessels to seek approval before transiting the route.
The disruptions raised concerns over global energy supplies and contributed to volatility in oil markets.
Key Issue In US-Iran Talks
The future of the Strait of Hormuz has emerged as one of the central issues in ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
While Iranian officials have indicated that the waterway could reopen as part of a broader agreement, Tehran has also insisted on maintaining sovereignty over security arrangements in the area.
Reports surrounding the draft memorandum under discussion suggest that restoring normal shipping operations through Hormuz could be among the first steps implemented if a final agreement is reached.
Economic Impact
A full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz would be closely watched by energy markets, shipping companies and major oil-importing nations, including India.
Analysts say the restoration of uninterrupted maritime traffic could ease pressure on global crude prices, lower shipping costs and improve supply chain stability across the region.
The development would also be significant for Asian economies that rely heavily on energy imports transported through the Gulf.
Deal Still Awaited
Although US and Iranian officials have expressed optimism about the direction of talks, a final agreement has not yet been formally signed.
Negotiators continue to work through outstanding issues, including sanctions relief, access to frozen Iranian funds and security arrangements in the Gulf.
Vance’s remarks are the latest indication that Washington expects any future agreement to guarantee unrestricted commercial access to one of the world’s most strategically important waterways.
