Defending champion Jannik Sinner kept his US Open title defense on track with a hard-fought victory over Denis Shapovalov on Saturday, while Hong Kong’s Coleman Wong saw his fairytale run end at the hands of Andrey Rublev.

World No. 1 Sinner was forced to rally from a set down before completing a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 win over the Canadian. The 23-year-old Italian is chasing history as he attempts to become the first man since Roger Federer in 2008 to defend the men’s singles crown at Flushing Meadows.

Sinner, who had lost his only previous meeting with Shapovalov at the 2021 Australian Open, admitted the match required both composure and quality.

“Denis is a really dangerous opponent. I knew I had to play at a very high level today," Sinner said. “Week two is always different—it gets tougher and tougher, physically and mentally. I’m just happy to still be here."

The top seed will now face either 14th seed Tommy Paul of the United States or 23rd seed Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan in the last 16.

Musetti Reaches First US Open Fourth Round

Fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti advanced to the round of 16 for the first time in New York after his compatriot Flavio Cobolli retired with an arm injury while trailing 6-3, 6-2, 2-0.

Musetti expressed mixed emotions about progressing in such circumstances: “I didn’t want to finish like that, especially against Flavio. He’s probably one of my best friends on tour," said the 10th seed.

Musetti will face Spain’s Jaume Munar next, with a potential quarter-final clash against Sinner looming if both Italians continue their winning form.

History was made on Saturday, as Swiss qualifier Leandro Riedi (ranked No. 435) became the lowest-ranked man to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam since 2002. His progress came after Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak retired after just eight games due to injury.

Rublev Ends Wong’s Breakthrough

The remarkable run of Coleman Wong—the first Hong Kong player ever to win a Grand Slam singles match in the Open Era—came to an end in a five-set thriller against Russian 15th seed Andrey Rublev.

The 20-year-old pushed the experienced Russian deep into a deciding set before eventually falling 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 on the Grandstand Court at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
