A dramatic and disturbing scene unfolded inside a United States Senate Armed Services Committee hearing when US Senator Tim Sheehy of Montana physically intervened to help Capitol Police remove an anti-war protester- accidentally breaking the man’s hand in the process. The incident was captured on video, which has since gone viral on social media.

The protester, identified as Brian McGuinness, a former US Marine sergeant, was demonstrating against American military action in Iran when he was forcibly ejected from the room. McGuinness, who was dressed in his military uniform at the time, reportedly gripped the corridor doorway while being removed and his hand was caught in the process.

The footage shows McGuinness shouting as police officers and Senator Sheehy forcibly drag him out of the hearing room. Those present can be heard reacting in alarm: “His hand, his hand! Oh! His hand! Oh, my God," one witness cries out. Officers are heard repeatedly telling the protester, “Sir. Let go of your hand. Let go of the door. Let go."

During the chaos, voices in the room can be heard declaring, “Senator Sheehy broke the arm of a US Marine."

McGuinness, who served in the US Marine Corps from 2000 to 2004, was also heard shouting, “No one wants to fight for Israel!"- a reference to the ongoing US military operations in the region- before being dragged out.

Senator Sheehy, a Republican and former US Navy SEAL officer, took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to justify his actions shortly after the incident.

“Capitol Police were attempting to remove an unhinged protestor from the Armed Services hearing. He was fighting back. I decided to help out and de-escalate the situation," Sheehy wrote. He further added, “This gentleman came to the Capitol looking for a confrontation, and he got one. I hope he gets the help he needs without causing further violence."

The senator also shared the video himself, identifying McGuinness as the person involved.

The US Capitol Police confirmed the arrest of McGuinness and he now faces six charges- three counts of assaulting a police officer and three counts of resisting arrest and conducting an unlawful demonstration.
