Emphasising the common democratic values of both countries, Vice-President C P Radhakrishnan on Friday at a meeting with United Kingdom House of Lords Speaker Lord John Francis McFall of Alcluith expressed interest in collaborating on the use of technology to support parliamentary work.

Meeting on the sidelines of the Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth being hosted by India, Radhakrishnan highlighted the “long and complex history” of India and the UK, a statement from the V-P’s Office said. He said while India had drawn inspiration from the Westminster model, its parliamentary system had evolved to reflect the country’s own unique democratic framework. He underlined the shared commitment to rule of law, parliamentary privilege and effective oversight of the executive.

“In the Indian context, the Vice President further emphasised on the importance of freedom of speech with responsibility and cautioned that it cannot be used for disruptive activities,” the statement read.

He said digital technology had transformed the functioning of Parliaments around the world. In India, an e-Parliament system, live-streaming of proceedings and digitisation of records had been carried out. The V-P spoke of the benefits of collaborating on leveraging technology for supporting drafting of legislation, facilitating deliberations and increasing citizen participation. The V-P said India was committed to exchange programmes for parliamentary delegations. He suggested joint workshops and knowledge-sharing efforts in the future.
