The Parliament Winter Session ended indefinitely without seeing the final day's end, with the passing of some key bills such as the G RAM G and the Shanti bill, stealing the spotlight. What also grabbed the attention was the Opposition's conduct in and outside of Parliament, with their vaping, smoking and arriving for the session with a dog.
Trinamool MP and former cricketer Kirti Azad was found allegedly vaping during proceedings, with the BJP sharing visuals on X and coming down heavily on the leader. This happened days after Azad's colleague Saugata Roy sparked a row after being caught smoking within the premises of Parliament, drawing massive backlash from the BJP.
Sources have now told India Today that a case of smoking in Lok Sabha is being investigated, and a committee will look at the facts before settling on a decision.
Another Opposition MP conduct that had stirred up a storm was Congress's Renuka Chowdhury bringing a street dog with her to Parliament. She said that she found the animal wandering near an accident site, scared after a scooter and a car collided, and picked it up before having it sent home. What caught more attention and caused a controversy was her remarks after the backlash, wherein she said the "real biters are sitting inside Parliament". Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had supported her, but the row didn't dissolve.
Sources told India Today that Rajya Sabha has filed a complaint against Renuka Chowdhury and the matter is currently being examined.
Besides these, Opposition MPs displayed placards in the form of a stir outside Parliament, including 'stop murder of MGNREGA' after the G RAM G Bill, to replace the UPA-era scheme, was passed in both Houses on Thursday.
Parliament sessions are typically plagued by the Opposition and the Centre clashing fiercely and MPs' staging walkouts, among others.
Before the start of Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a sharp dig at the Opposition leaders, saying that he was ready to give them tips on how to change their strategy.
"The game the Opposition have been playing for the past 10 years is no longer acceptable to the people. They should change their strategy. I am ready to give them a few tips," he added in his customary address to the media ahead of the session.
