Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) president G.K. Vasan on Wednesday (August 6, 2025) urged the Tamil Nadu government to hold talks with sanitation workers employed under the National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM) in the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), who have been protesting for nearly six days, pressing for various demands, including the regularisation of their services.
In a statement, Mr. Vasan said the sanitation workers have demanded that they be allowed to continue working directly under the civic body rather than through private contractors, fearing adverse consequences. They have also sought job regularisation as promised by the DMK before the previous Assembly elections.
He said the government should treat the demands of the sanitation workers as a matter of priority. However, for the past six days, the protest has led to waste piling up across various parts of Chennai, raising public health concerns.
The State government should immediately initiate talks with the protesters and arrive at an amicable solution, he added.
