The Telangana State Waqf Board (TGWB) will move the Waqf Tribunal for a second time as an original application (OA) they had filed seeking an extension of the UMEED portal deadline met with no relief. TGWB Chairman Syed Amzatullah Husseini said that the fresh application is likely to be filed.

“The tribunal stated that the institutions should file for an extension individually. The fresh OA will have references of waqf tribunals of Punjab, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh. These have given an extension of up to six months. As was the case last time, we will again ask for an extension of six months,” Mr. Husseini said.

The board had filed the OA seeking an extension of six months as provided by Section 3 B of the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025. The board maintained that technical issues such as outages and frequent slowdowns with UMEED portal led to problems with accessing it.

Two other parties, the Association of TS Sajjadanasheen Mutawalli and Khidmatguzaran of Waqfs and Telangana Dargah District Association, bodies that comprise hereditary sajjada nasheens (those who lead religious institutions such as dargahs) too had filed separate O.As seeking similar reliefs. However these OAs were returned.

In the order, the Waqf Tribunal stated that per Section 3 B (1) of the Act and Rule 6 of the UMEED Rules, it is the mutawalli who should enter details and upload data to the portal. The mutawalli has to file the application for extension and give reasons.

The tribunal also noted that the Government of India had notified the rules in the gazette on July 3 this year. The tribunal was of the view that the period prescribed under Section 3 B (1) should be counted from the date of notification of the rules.
