Watch: Ghana MPs honour PM Modi by donning Indian attire; wear pagdi and bandhgala suit to parliament

NEW DELHI: Two members of Ghana’s Parliament in a symbolic show of solidarity and admiration for Indian culture donned traditional Indian attire as Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the House during his historic visit on Thursday.As Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin concluded PM Modi’s address, he pointed out the gesture with a touch of humour and warmth. “I recognise that the honourable member is itching to visit India. I want to assure you that I will not hold my pen from approving your visit... My attention has been drawn to the fact that he is not alone and has a partner... I thank the members for showing their love for India, its people and their culture,” said Bagbin, drawing applause from the House.

One MP was seen wearing a pagdi and a traditional Bandhgala suit, while a female Parliamentarian proudly displayed her Indian attire, capturing the attention of both lawmakers and Prime Minister Modi himself.The moment added a cultural charm to an already significant occasion, as PM Modi became the first Indian Prime Minister to address Ghana’s Parliament in over three decades. His speech was attended by senior Ghanaian leaders, members of the Council of State, the diplomatic corps, civil society groups, political representatives, and the Indian diaspora in Ghana.

“It is a privilege to be in Ghana — a land that radiates the spirit of democracy, dignity, and resilience. As the representative of the world's largest democracy, I bring with me the goodwill and greetings of 1.4 billion Indians,” Modi said in his address.He lauded Ghana as a beacon of democratic values and emphasised the growing strength of India-Ghana ties. “Africa’s goals are our priorities. Our approach is to grow together as equals,” he said, reiterating India’s support for Africa’s Agenda 2063 development framework.Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi was conferred Ghana’s highest civilian award — Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana — by President John Dramani Mahama. Modi described the honour as a recognition of India’s youth, its vibrant diversity, and the deep-rooted friendship between the two nations.“It is a matter of great pride and honour... I humbly accept this award on behalf of 1.4 billion Indians,” PM Modi said.A statement from President Mahama’s office noted the award recognised Modi’s leadership, global influence, and efforts to foster deeper bilateral ties. It also highlighted his contributions to global development and spiritual diplomacy.The two leaders held extensive talks during the visit and agreed to elevate bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Partnership, further deepening cooperation in trade, capacity building, and regional development.
