Porto signed striker Luuk de Jong before a preseason match against Atletico Madrid. The club honored Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who died in a car crash.

Portuguese club FC Porto surprised their fans ahead of a preseason friendly match on Sunday by announcing the signing of striker Luuk de Jong. The club introduced players and new signings for the upcoming season, then presented De Jong to the fans at the Estadio do Dragao in Porto.

The 34-year-old Dutch player emerged from the tunnel to greet the crowd after being introduced by a stadium announcer.

De Jong, a former Dutch international, joined Porto after playing for PSV Eindhoven. He has previously played for Barcelona and Sevilla, among other clubs.

Porto faced Atletico Madrid in the preseason match.

Diogo Jota honoured

Diogo Jota and his brother were honoured before the preseason friendly match between Porto and Atletico Madrid.

Jota and André Silva died in a car crash on July 3 in Spain.

Liverpool star Jota’s previous clubs included Porto and Atletico. There was a moment of silence as players from both teams stood side by side on the field at the Estadio do Dragao in Porto before fans loudly applauded from the stands. A video was shown honouring Jota, a Portugal international, and his brother, who was also once a member of the Portuguese club.

Fans applauded again in the 20th minute. Liverpool has already announced that it is retiring Jota’s No. 20 jersey number.
