Large swathes of the national capital are set to face water shortages as the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) reduced output at two of its key water treatment plants—Wazirabad and Chandrawal—due to insufficient raw water supply, officials said on Friday.

According to the DJB, the water level at the Wazirabad pond has dropped to 668.70 feet, significantly below the normal level of 674.50 feet. The pond supplies raw water to the Wazirabad, Chandrawal, and Okhla treatment plants.

“It is getting difficult to maintain the required raw water supply to Wazirabad and Chandrawal WTP and consequently curtailment in production of potable water. This situation affecting the production approximately by 25-30 per cent of potable water at both," the DJB said in a statement.

Wazirabad and Chandrawal plants, which have average daily capacities of 131 million gallons (MGD) and 94 MGD respectively, are expected to see a sharp drop in output, further straining the city’s already stretched water supply.

Delhi’s overall water demand stands at around 1,290 MGD, according to the latest Economic Survey, with demand surging in the summer months.

The DJB’s typical supply ranges between 990 and 1,000 MGD, including water sourced from tubewells. Current estimates suggest that production has dropped by 70–100 MGD due to the low water levels at Wazirabad.

Neighbourhoods expected to be hit include South Extension, Greater Kailash, Jahangirpuri, Moolchand, Majnu Ka Tila, Kashmere Gate ISBT, NDMC areas, ITO, Defence Colony, CGO Complex, Rajghat, WHO, Ramleela Ground, and Delhi Gate, among others. Civil Lines, Hindu Rao Hospital, Kamla Nagar, Shakti Nagar, Karol Bagh, Paharganj, and parts of Cantonment will also be affected.

“Therefore, the public is advised to make judicious use of water. Water tankers shall be available on demand from the DJB helpline 1916," the statement added.

The DJB has not provided any timeline for when normal supply levels are expected to resume.
