Welham Girls’ School opens museum showcasing its heritage

Dehradun's Welham Girls’ School has opened a new School Museum to mark its history and legacy. The museum has been set up within Nasreen, the former Nizam’s estate on which the school was founded in 1957.

Glimpse into the WGS Museum

Welham Girls’ School was established ten years after Independence by Hersilia Susie Oliphant and Grace Mary Linnell, as a counterpart to Welham Boys’ School. At a time when opportunities for girls in residential schools were limited, the founders created a space that helped promote women’s education in postcolonial India. Over the years, students of Welham have contributed to various national causes, including during the Indo-China War. The inauguration of the museum was attended by board members, dignitaries, and alumnae. Two distinguished alumnae, Neelam Khanna (Batch of 1965) and Premila Nazir (Batch of 1957), were present as Chief Guest and Guest of Honour. Nazir was the first student to be officially registered at the school. Both spoke about their memories of the institution and its lasting influence. Romesh Sobti, President of the Board of Governors, said the museum reflects the courage and vision of the school’s founders and the values that continue to guide Welham. Principal Vibha Kapoor added that the museum captures the broader mission of holistic development and leadership. The museum houses memorabilia, notes, and artefacts from different eras of the school’s journey. It highlights the stories, traditions, and culture that continue to shape generations of Welham students.
