San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama has been medically cleared to resume basketball activities after recovering from the blood clot issue that prematurely ended his 2024–25 NBA season, according to a report from L’Équipe.
“I’m officially cleared to return," Wembanyama told the publication. “It just happened — I got the green light from the Spurs’ medical staff. … I’ll finally be able to play a bit of basketball again."
Surgery Followed Deep Vein Thrombosis Diagnosis
Wembanyama underwent surgery in March after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his right shoulder. The condition, which involves the formation of blood clots in deep veins, required immediate medical attention and ruled him out for the remainder of the season.
In May, ESPN reported that Wembanyama was expected to be fully healthy by the start of training camp and ready for regular-season action.
With the medical clearance now confirmed, the 21-year-old is set to rejoin the team without restriction heading into the 2025–26 season.
Dominant Second Season Cut Short
Before the setback, Wembanyama was putting together a dominant campaign. In 46 starts during the 2024–25 season, he averaged 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and an NBA-best 3.8 blocked shots per game. He also earned his first All-Star selection and continued to establish himself as one of the league’s elite two-way players.
The 7-foot-3 French phenom was the unanimous NBA Rookie of the Year in 2023–24 after being selected first overall in the 2023 NBA Draft.
Across his first two seasons, Wembanyama has averaged 22.5 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.2 steals, and 3.7 blocks over 117 games—all of them starts. He has also made 270 three-pointers, showcasing his rare combination of size, shooting, and defensive impact.
