West Bengal Voter List 2025: West Bengal will see a flurry of activity from November 4 as the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) kicks off in 12 states and Union Territories. While Bihar saw much controversy over the exercise, Bengal has also seen a flurry of reactions. Ahead of the West Bengal Assembly Elections scheduled for next year (2026), it is very important for those registered to vote in West Bengal to check whether their name or the name of their parents or relatives appears in the electoral roll of SIR 2002.

SIR rules in West Bengal: Why is Election Commission holding SIR in West Bengal

This isn’t the first time an SIR is being conducted. Independent India has seen eight SIR exercises from 1951 to 2004.

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said that SIR is being held in 12 states and UTs, including West Bengal, to maintain the “purity” of the electoral rolls. “For the past few decades, almost all political parties have continuously complained about the impurity of the electoral roll,” he said while announcing the exercise.

The last such exercise was held in 2002 and it is only natural that many voters who were on that list have moved elsewhere or died. There’s also the chance of voters registered at more than one place, and wrongful inclusion of foreigners.

You must trace your name, or those of your parents or relatives, to the West Bengal electoral roll from the last intensive revision held about two decades ago. This exercise is also being held in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh, besides West Bengal.

Four of these — Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry and West Bengal — are set to see elections next year (2026).

West Bengal SIR verification: What happens if your name is not in West Bengal SIR 2002

The Election Commission will publish the draft electoral list on December 9 and the final electoral roll on February 7, 2026. The poll body will arrive at these lists by following a two-pronged approach:

  • Those eligible to vote will need to match their names to the last intensive revision rolls of 2002-2005. Once the matching is complete, the EC will publish the draft rolls.
  • Those whose names or the names of their parents/relatives are not found on the list will be issued notices. Such people will need to establish their eligibility to appear on the electoral roll by submitting documents.
