West Ham United are pushing aggressively in the transfer market as they look to revive their poor start to the season.

Reports indicate the club is on the verge of signing Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes from Southampton in a deal that could be worth £38 million, plus add-ons and a future sell-on clause.

Negotiations accelerated on Wednesday, with Fernandes understood to have already completed his medical in London. According to The Athletic, the deal includes £3m in potential add-ons and a 15 per cent sell-on clause, ensuring Southampton retain a financial interest in the player’s future.

The 21-year-old has been a standout for Southampton since his arrival, making 46 appearances, scoring four goals, and providing seven assists. Before joining the Saints, Fernandes developed his game in Portugal with Sporting CP and Estoril, gaining a reputation as a dynamic, technically skilled midfielder.

On the international stage, Fernandes has represented Portugal at every youth level up to the under-21s, earning 36 caps, though he is still awaiting his first senior call-up.

Magassa Deal Also Advancing

West Ham’s midfield rebuild will not stop with Fernandes. The club is also on the verge of finalising a deal for Soungoutou Magassa from Monaco. The Frenchman is expected to cost €17m (£14.7m) plus €3m in add-ons, though the move has faced late competition from Eintracht Frankfurt.

Potter Under Pressure

Manager Graham Potter has found himself in an increasingly difficult position. West Ham have lost their first three competitive matches of the 2025–26 season—two in the Premier League and one in the Carabao Cup against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Their next league fixture, away at Nottingham Forest on Sunday, already feels like a pivotal test for Potter’s tenure.

The poor start has led to mounting scrutiny, but the West Ham hierarchy appears to be backing their manager with major investment. The combined outlay for Fernandes and Magassa could exceed £50m, underlining the board’s belief that Potter deserves the chance to work with a refreshed squad.
