In a deadly escalation, Iran’s Sejil missile struck southern Israel early Thursday, hitting the Soroka Medical Center and injuring over 30 people. The powerful blast sent thick black smoke billowing over the area. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) later confirmed the strike, according to Iran’s Tasnim News Agency.
The Sejil missile is a domestically developed medium-range ballistic missile from Iran, boasting a range of 2,000 to 2,500 km and capable of carrying a payload of 700-1,000 kg.
Key Specifications Of Sejil Missile?
- Length: 18 meters
- Diameter: 1.25 meters
- Launch Weight: 23,600 kilograms
- Payload Capacity: Up to 700 kilograms
Iran began manufacturing the Sejil missile in 1990, with suspected assistance from China. The missile was first tested in 2008 and underwent subsequent testing in 2009 with improvements to its guidance system. By 2012, the missile was tested four times and had a range enhancement to 1,900 km. In January 2021, the Sejil missile was highlighted as a significant weapon during military exercises.
This marks the first deployment of the Sejil missile by Iran, escalating the potential for intensified conflict between Iran and Israel. Additionally, Iran has opted to employ both supersonic and ballistic missiles in future attacks.
Earlier on Wednesday, Iran used its hypersonic Fatah-1 missile, the first of its kind, which was previously utilised in an attack on Israel in 2024.
The Fatah-1 travels at speeds ranging from 16,000 to 18,500 kilometers per hour, making it exceedingly difficult to intercept. This missile is designed for ground-to-ground attacks, eluding enemy security systems.
Iran Unveils Khorramshahr-4 Missile
Iran has also demonstrated the ‘Khorramshahr-4’ ballistic missile, which can deliver a 1,500 kg warhead up to a range of 2,000 km. The IRGC has issued a stark warning to Israel through a video, showcasing the missile’s capabilities.
