Childbirth is not easy, and Rubina Dilaik vouches for it. In her podcast Kisine Bataya Nahi: The Motherhood Journey, while discussing her pregnancy and birth of twins with actor Pankhuri Awasthy, she recalled how her gynaecologist shared a “scary” detail about her delivery.

“My gynecologist, in fact, told me that my stomach muscles have torn apart. They would never come back again. It is scary because normally during pregnancy, there is an expansion of muscles. Once delivery is carried out, they come back to shape with exercise, time, and binding. But my muscles have torn apart. Now, there is no question of them joining together. You can’t stitch them,” recalled Dilaik, who delivered her baby girls in November 2023.

This is why, she had to undergo a C-section, added Dilaik. “My doctor had apprised me before itself saying that because of the twins, and the body is petite, they will grow in their full glory, strength, and everything but your body won’t be able to take it. Hence, the need for a C-section,” said Dilaik.

Let’s understand more about this condition.

Called diastasis recti or abdominal separation, the condition leads the abdominal muscles to stretch and separate due to the growing uterus, causing a gap in the midline of the abdomen.

“It can cause weakness in the core, lower back pain, and a visible bulge in the stomach area even after delivery,” said Dr Anuja Thomas, consultant, obstetrician and gynecologist, Motherhood Hospital, Kharghar, Mumbai.

This condition is a “common occurrence during pregnancy” as the body tries to accommodate the growing baby; women heal on her own. “However, some women experience prolonged weakness or discomfort and are advised to seek expert help. They are also recommended to do core-strengthening exercises, physiotherapy, and take adequate rest to recover,” said Dr Thomas.

Once divarication has happened, it is advised woman start with an exercise programme only under a physiotherapist. “In some cases, further exercise, especially without supervision, can deteriorate and bring more trouble,” said Dr Thomas, adding that medical intervention may be required in extreme cases.

Women must consult the doctor to regain strength safely. “Likewise, new mothers should pay attention to posture, avoid strenuous abdominal exercises, and focus on deep core engagement through controlled movements. There is a lack of awareness regarding this condition among women,” said Dr Thomas.
