Parupalli Kashyap was in the Netherlands when Saina Nehwal announced their divorce on Instagram.

Glasgow Commonwealth Games gold medallist shuttler Parupalli Kashyap was seemingly in the Netherlands when London Olympics bronze medallist Saina Nehwal announced their divorce on social media, as per an Instagram story shared by Kashyap himself a few hours before.

Saina had announced her divorce late Sunday night, saying that she and Kashyap decided to choose peace, growth and healing.

While Kashyap is yet to break silence on the matter, his last Instagram story, which was posted almost six hours before Saina’s announcement, showed that he was among friends.

The Instagram story saw Kashyap enjoying the Awakenings Festival, which was held between July 11 and 13 in Hilvarenbeek in the Netherlands.

In the story, Kashyap’s fellow badminton players, Guru Sai Dutt and Pranav Chopra, can also be seen.

In 2012, at the London Olympics where Saina won bronze, Kashyap became the first Indian man to reach the quarterfinals in Olympic badminton.

A year later, Kashyap climbed to a career-best world ranking of No. 6.

Taking to Instagram on Sunday, July 13, Saina shared the personal update that has taken the sporting world by surprise.

“Life takes us in different directions sometimes. After much thought and consideration, Kashyap Parupalli and I have decided to part ways. We’re choosing peace, growth, and healing, for ourselves and each other," Saina wrote on her Instagram story.

“I’m grateful for the memories and wish nothing but the best moving forward. Thank you for understanding and respecting our privacy during this time," Saina added.

Saina and Kashyap got married in December 2018. They trained together at the Pullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad from their initial days in the sport.

While Saina became a global icon with her Olympic bronze and world No. 1 ranking, Kashyap broke into the world top 10 and clinched the 2014 Commonwealth Games gold. The latter also won bronze at the 2010 New Delhi CWG.

Kashyap’s last appearance on court was in the Vietnam Open in September 2023, where he lost in the qualification round. Saina has been off the court even longer, last seen playing in June 2023 at the Singapore Open, where she lost in the opening round to Ratchanok Intanon.
