The Opposition BJP on Wednesday alleged that rampant corruption in getting postings was the main reason for the police personnel themselves involving in serious crimes of late, causing mistrust about the police force and wondered which Indra (king of gods) was controlling the racket.
Participating in a debate in the Legislative Assembly on the alleged deterioration of law and order situation in the State, Leader of the Opposition R. Ashok squarely blamed collusion of police with criminals as the main reason for it.
He said the police personnel themselves were backing the illegal network of drug peddlers in Bengaluru, especially around schools and colleges. Whatever drug seizure was happening in Bengaluru was only about 5% of the total drug volume that was coming to the State, he alleged.
Mr. Ashok took note of the police involving in various crimes and wondered how a terror-suspect in the central prison in Parappana Agrahara could use mobile phones. About 130 police personnel in 11 sub-divisions of Bengaluru had been suspended in the last 11 months alone for involvement in crimes, he said.
BJP Member V. Sunil Kumar alleged that generally a police inspector had to pay ₹20 lakh to ₹25 lakh as bribe for getting good posting, while the ACP had to pay around ₹75 lakh and the Superintendent of Police would have to pay ₹2 crore to ₹3 crore for a good posting.
Maintaining that Home Minister G. Parameshwara was not the kind of person who would indulge in corruption, he asked, “Then which Indra (king of gods) is running such a transfer racket in the Police Department?”
He said the State had witnessed 10,510 rape cases in the last two-and-half years while 2,430 boys and 6,186 girls were missing in the same period.
