Luz María Barrera Agatón, a 36-year-old renowned bodybuilder and beauty influencer from Mexico, was tragically discovered lifeless in a hotel swimming pool in Motul, Quintana Roo, on Sunday morning.
She had been vacationing with family and friends at the Coco Resort & Villas Hotel, located west of Cancun. Earlier in the evening, she had been seen socializing around the cenote-style pool before retiring to her room around midnight. Her body was found hours later, and despite efforts by paramedics, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have initiated an investigation into her death and have not ruled out foul play.
Local reports indicate that just two weeks prior to her passing, threatening banners were discovered outside her gym in Merida, Yucatán. Luz María reportedly removed the signs herself and did not inform the police. In 2017, she and her then-partner, Chiri Roberto, a former state prosecutor, were also targeted with threats.
Additionally, her gym was the site of a tragic accident in 2023 when a barbell fell on a young man, allegedly due to a trainer's negligence.
Investigators are examining whether these incidents are connected to her untimely death.
