At the centre of the Faridabad ‘white collar terror module’, which was busted hours before Delhi’s Red Fort blast on Monday, is Maulvi Irfan Ahmad from Jammu and Kashmir’s (J&K) Shopian.

“Maulvi Irfan Ahmad played a crucial role in radicalising these medical students. He was a paramedical in GMC Srinagar and was in touch with all students. He was also an Imam in Nowgam Mosque," said intelligence sources.

How the Maulvi was arrested

The Jammu and Kashmir Police’s investigation began after posters supporting militant outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) surfaced in Srinagar on October 27.

Three overground workers, who had a history of being stone pelters, were picked up, who led police to Maulvi Irfan Ahmad. His inputs led to the arrest of Dr Adeel Ahmad Rather and Zameer Ahangar, who was associated with the Shopian cleric.

This led the J&K Police to Dr Muzammil, who was operating from the rooms owned by the Maulvi. Muzammil was a doctor working at Al Falah University in Faridabad’s Dhauj. The Maulvi was also found linked to another Dr Umar.

Dr Shaheen Saeed, a woman doctor from Uttar Pradesh, whose role has emerged as critical in financing and facilitating the operation. According to top intelligence sources, Shaheen was associated with Dr Umar, who studied at Al Falah Medical College in Faridabad. Dr Umar is believed to have been driving the car that exploded in Delhi on Monday evening.

The police recovered 350 kg of ammonium nitrate, weapons and bomb-making components and an AK-47 rifle from one of the rented rooms. The security forces also recovered 2,563 kg of suspected explosives from the second property in Haryana’s Faridabad. The seizure was made in Fatehpur Taga village, around 4 km from the Dhauj area.

How the Maulvi operated

According to sources, Maulvi worked on radicalising medical students. “He was inspired by Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and used to show videos to students. He was talking to someone in Afghanistan on VOIP," he said.

According to agencies, his job was to ensure radicalisation, while Muzzamil and Omar used to take the process forward. “Shaheen was a facilitator, but the brain was Irfan," said sources.

Maulvi circulated JeM propaganda

Irfan maintained multiple Telegram and Threema accounts through which he circulated Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) propaganda. “He also showed Afghan war-time sermons to targeted students," sources said.

According to investigators, he is suspected to have received ideological guidance and encrypted voice instructions from handlers based in Nangarhar.
