IndiGo Row Rekindles Debate Over BJP Leader Nazia Elahi Khan’s Record

BJP Minority Leader Nazia Elahi Khan recently came into the spotlight after launching a sharp attack on the owner of IndiGo Airlines. In social media posts, she questioned how the airline is run, criticised its hiring practices and openly challenged the carrier to blacklist her from flying. Her remarks quickly sparked controversy and widespread debate online.

Who is Nazia Elahi Khan?

Nazia Elahi Khan, also known as Nazia Sanatani, is a BJP-affiliated leader, a senior lawyer and a regular public speaker. She is often presented as a minority face of the party but is better known for her strong views on Hindu nationalist issues. Over the years, she has become a frequent speaker at Hindu activist events across the country.

Khan has repeatedly spoken against Islamic practices such as halala, madrasas, Waqf boards and what she calls “love jihad". In her speeches, she has warned Hindu audiences about what she describes as demographic and cultural threats. She has also promoted narratives linked to “Ghazwa-e-Hind", a term used in extremist and conspiracy-driven discourse.

Past controversies 

Her statements have often drawn criticism and complaints. In January 2025, Citizens for Justice and Peace filed a complaint against her over alleged hate speech delivered at a public event in Rohini, Delhi. The complaint accused her of making sweeping allegations against Muslims, including claims linking them to violence, terrorism and rejection of education.

On February 24, 2025, Khan posted a video on X claiming she was followed by Muslim men during a journey to the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. She alleged that they intentionally crashed into her vehicle. However, Kanpur Dehat Police later stated that the accident was caused by her driver falling asleep. Police urged people not to spread misinformation, but the video had already gone viral.

In May 2024, at a public meeting in Maharashtra, Khan warned Hindu women against Muslim men, repeating claims linked to “love jihad". In January 2025, at an event in Karnataka, she alleged that Muslims were being trained in mosques to target Hindu women, a claim widely criticised as inflammatory.

Khan’s recent comments on IndiGo have added to her long list of controversies.
