Nehal Deepak Modi, the younger brother of fugitive businessman Nirav Modi, has been arrested in the United States after Indian authorities raised an extradition request.
A Belgian national, Nehal was arrested on July 4 acting on a Red Corner Notice issued by Interpol at the request of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Nehal is wanted in India in connection with the multi-billion-dollar Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, one of the largest banking scams in the country’s history. Investigations by the ED and CBI have revealed that Nehal played a key role in laundering proceeds of crime on behalf of Nirav Modi, who is also facing extradition from the UK. He is alleged to have assisted in concealing and transferring large sums of illicit funds through a web of shell companies and overseas transactions, in violation of Indian laws.
Probe has revealed that Nehal was the director of the now-defunct Firestar Diamonds USA and was also involved with the Ithaca Trust. The trust was set up to fund and buy real estate for Nirav Modi after money received from Letter Of Undertaking issued by Punjab National Bank was diverted into shell companies, India Today reported.
According to ED, Nehal also tampered with evidence linked to several dummy companies established by Nirav Modi across the UAE, Hong Kong, the British Virgin Islands, the United States, Barbados, and other locations. These shell entities reportedly communicated via secret servers based in the UAE, which Nehal is accused of destroying in January to obstruct the investigation.
