Yannick Agnel’s Olympic career and the allegations that led to his trial
It’s complicated, but I’ve been through so much over the last four years. Choices I do not regret at all because they brought me good things, but athletically, it’s more difficult. I’m feeling old.”Five years later, in 2021, the situation changed completely. A young woman filed a complaint, accusing Agnel of s*xually assaulting her in 2016. According to French media, including Le Monde, the victim was a member of the Mulhouse Olympic Natation swimming club and is the daughter of Agnel’s former coach. After his arrest in December 2021, Agnel admitted to having a relationship with the minor but denied any form of coercion. The Associated Press reported that prosecutor Edwige Roux-Morizot said Agnel “recognizes the materiality of the alleged facts.” She explained, “If the facts constitute rape or s*xual assault, it is because there is a significant age difference.”Le Monde further reported that Roux-Morizot stated Agnel had “acknowledged the material facts of the charges, even if for some rapes he has a memory problem,” after spending 48 hours in police custody. In May last year, a Mulhouse public prosecutor confirmed that Agnel would be sent to trial before the Haut-Rhin criminal court. The victim’s lawyer welcomed the move, saying, via Le Monde, “The investigating judge in Mulhouse is reaffirming something that should be common sense, a 23-year-old man cannot have s*xual relations with a 13-year-old child.”Yannick Agnel appealed the decision, but the Colmar Court of Appeal rejected his appeal. Authorities confirmed that he will now stand trial in the case.
