As the investigation into the Delhi Red Fort blast is going deeper, it is believed that Dr Umar U Nabi, a medical professional turned terror suspect, may have triggered the blast.

Earlier in the morning, the first photo of Dr Umar, suspected to be the suicide bomber in the Delhi blast case, surfaced. It is speculated that he was driving the white Hyundai i20 that exploded near the Red Fort on Monday evening, killing at least 12 people.

Who Was Dr Umar U Nabi?

According to sources, Dr Umar U Nabi, son of Gh Nabi Bhat, was employed as a doctor at Al-Falah Medical College in Faridabad. His mother, Shamima Banoo, hails from Koil in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir.

Born on February 24, 1989, Dr Umar was reportedly a close associate of Dr Adeel, another suspect under investigation in the ongoing terror network probe.

Sources said Umar’s father, a government school teacher who is mentally unwell, left his job about 10–15 years ago. He has two brothers and an elder sister — one brother and the sister are married, while the other brother is unmarried. Both brothers and his mother have been detained by police for questioning.

Officials believe Dr Umar was part of a group of medical professionals radicalised through encrypted Telegram channels, forming what investigators are now calling the “Faridabad module."

According to reports, Umar completed his MD in Medicine from Government Medical College, Srinagar and worked as a senior resident at GMC Anantnag. He later moved to Delhi. He was serving as an Assistant Professor at Al-Falah Medical College in Faridabad at the time of the blast.

Delhi Red Fort Blast

At 6.52 pm on Monday, a white Hyundai i20 car pulled up to a red light at Subhas Marg, a crowded part of old Delhi, and exploded within seconds, sending shockwaves across the country.

The intensity of the blast was such that several vehicles were also engulfed in fire, and people were thrown around. The visuals circulating on social media from the ground showed mangled bodies lying around.

The blast came hours after the Haryana Police on Monday morning, along with Jammu and Kashmir Police, busted a “white-collar" terror module and arrested Dr Adeel Ahmad Rather and Dr Mujammil Shakil, close aides of Dr Umar.

The police also seized 2,900 kg of explosives and weapons such as assault rifles and pistols. This, according to the sources, triggered Dr Umar Mohammad to carry out a blast.

DNA Sample Collected from Family

The police on Tuesday called the mother of Dr Umar Nabi, suspected to be driving the car that exploded near the Red Fort, for a DNA test in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir.

“We have taken the mother of the suspect to collect DNA samples in order to match with the parts found at the scene of the blast," an official was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
