'Who Will Go To Theatres If Threats Are Given?' Supreme Court On Kamal Hasan's 'Thug Life' Row

The court observed that it is the duty of the state to ensure mobs who threaten people are taken to task

The Supreme Court on Thursday came down heavily on the Karnataka government and asked it to allow the release of Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan’s film ‘Thug Life’, saying that “it is the duty of the state to ensure these mobs who threaten people are taken to task".

“If threats are given, who will go to theatres?" the court asked, adding that the state has filed an affidavit categorically stating it has not imposed any restriction on the release of the movie.

Karnataka has informed the Supreme Court that it is ready to extend security to the movie’s makers and cast but filmmakers are hesitant about releasing the movie in the state two weeks after its worldwide release.

As the counsel noted that sentiments were running high in the state, the court said: “This [issue of] sentiments being hurt. There will be no end to it. Because of these should movies be stopped? Should stand-up comedians be stopped? Poets should not recite poems? In India, there will be no end to hurting sentiments."
