A local businessman was allegedly murdered by his wife and teenage daughter in Assam’s Dibrugarh. Police arrested the mother-daughter duo, along with two others, on Sunday, eight days after the crime.

The victim, 52-year-old Uttam Gogoi, was found dead in his home on July 25. What initially appeared to be a robbery gone wrong has now emerged as a meticulously planned murder, allegedly orchestrated by Gogoi’s own family.

According to police, Gogoi’s 16-year-old daughter, a Class 9 student, was reportedly in a relationship with 21-year-old Dipjyoti Buragohain, who has also been arrested.

The mother and daughter allegedly paid Buragohain and his minor accomplice a large sum of money and handed over gold jewellery to execute the murder.

Police have recovered the gold jewellery following the arrests.

“They tried to make it look like a robbery to confuse the police, but their stories didn’t match up, and forensic evidence showed their involvement,” said Rakesh Reddy, Dibrugarh Senior Superintendent of Police.

SSP Reddy, who is overseeing the investigation, said that the police are investigating to find out the motive of the murder.

“The investigation is ongoing, and we are questioning the suspects to get to the bottom of this. Once it's finished, we will know the motive,” the officer added.

The case has sent shockwaves through the typically quiet neighbourhood of Lahon Gaon, where Uttam Gogoi was a respected member of the community. Following the arrests, protests erupted in Barbaruah, with locals demanding the strictest possible punishment for those responsible.
