Kylian Mbappé’s availability for Real Madrid’s Club World Cup quarter-final against Borussia Dortmund remains uncertain, coach Xabi Alonso said on Friday.

Mbappe, who is in the USA at the Club World Cup, had what the club called “an acute case of gastroenteritis" and was taken in for tests and treatment.

Gastroenteritis is an infection in the gut that can cause vomiting and diarrhea.

The Frenchman made his tournament debut on Tuesday in Real Madrid’s narrow 1-0 victory over Juventus, a win that secured their place in the quarter-finals after he missed the entire group stage.

“He’s getting better. He’s been improving over the last three days," Alonso told reporters at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. “Tomorrow morning we will be deciding if he will be part of the initial 11."

The forward entered the match as a second-half substitute, drawing loud cheers from fans at the Miami venue — a moment that showcased his global star power at the U.S.-based tournament.

Earlier in the tournament, Mbappé was briefly hospitalized and kept in isolation from his teammates while recovering from illness.

Garcia Steps Up

In Mbappé’s absence, Real Madrid have relied on 21-year-old academy product Gonzalo Garcia, who has delivered a standout performance. Garcia has tallied three goals, including the decisive strike against Juventus, and provided one assist.

“I think (Garcia and Mbappé) could complement each other and if it’s something that is required, it’s not something I’m going to turn a blind eye to," Alonso said.

Real Madrid now turn their attention to Borussia Dortmund, who advanced to the quarter-finals by fending off a strong second-half comeback from Monterrey to win 2-1 earlier this week.

“Dortmund is a very good team. As soon as (coach Niko Kovac) was at the helm, they were growing and developing and on the rise," Alonso noted. “We are facing a tough opponent… It’s gonna be tight tomorrow."
