Woman dies as wall collapses in heavy rain in Belagavi

Heavy rain caused the death of an old woman in Belagavi district on Thursday night.

An auto driver was washed away in torrential rain in Chikkabudanur village near Yaragatti.

He tried to take his auto through an overflowing stream but he and the vehicle were swept away. However, he was rescued by villagers around half-a-mile away.

In Chikkanandi village of Gokak taluk, a 65-year-old woman man died after a mud wall collapsed.

Locals who heard the wall collapse rushed to the house. They managed to pull out Fakkiravva Haveri and took her to hospital. Doctors declared her brought dead.

Cases have been registered in different police stations.

Rainfall continued to lash some places, including Nippani, Raibag and Khanapur in Belagavi district and Guledgudda and Rabakavi in Bagalkot district.

Commuters faced inconvenience when the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway was flooded near Nippani for nearly an hour. Water stood two foot high on the highway. However, vehicles waded through it. The water level receded after some time.

Inflow at Hippargi Barrage was 9,751 cusecs and outflow 7,703 cusecs. Inflow at the Raja Lakhamagouda Reservoir on the Ghataprabha in Hidkal was 911 cusecs and outflow 112 cusecs. The reservoir had 48.9 tmcft of water against a full reservoir level of 51 tmcft.

Inflow at the Renuka Sagar Dam on the Malaprabha was negligible and outflow 194 cusecs.
